Institute of Linguists Home Study Course
for the
Institute of Linguists' Diploma in Translation

Distance Learning

Distance learning has rapidly become the recognised alternative to institution-centred learning. It is of particular benefit to those who need to integrate learning with a career or with running a home. Distance learning allows you to take control of the pace of your learning; you can arrange it wherever you are and whenever you have the time. And choosing the right time for reflection can lead to deeper and therefore more effective learning. Distance learning is, however, by no means an easy option. An autonomous learning style requires self-discipline and determination, allocating sufficient time and adopting a mature, independent approach to your study.

The right tutors and the most appropriate course are the keys to success in your chosen field. For distance learning to be a rewarding as well as an enlightening experience, your own resolve to succeed should dovetail with sympathetic coaching and support from your tutor. Whilst the level of expertise you are aiming for is benchmarked, the concerns of each student are highly individual and your course should therefore be a personal one.

You should be aware of what is required of you and what you can expect from your tutors and your course. We hope the following information will answer some of these and other questions, but please do not hesitate to ask if your own particular concerns are not dealt with here.
